What is IELTS?
Your ability to listen, read, write and speak in English will be assessed during the test. You will be awarded an IELTS band score from 0-9 for each test section (Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking), and an overall band score which reflects your proficiency in English.

1. How does the IELTS test work?
The structure of the test is as follows: Listening (30 Minutes), Reading (60 Minutes), Writing (60 Minutes) and Speaking (11-14 Minutes).
- Listening (30 Minutes)
In the listening module you´ll have four parts with ten questions each. You´ll have in total 40 questions in this module. The questions are designed in a way that the answers appear in the order they are heard in the recording. The recordings could be heard only once. You will listen to four recordings in following themes:
Recording 1 – a dialogue between two people set in a daily context.
Recording 2 – a monologue set in a social context, i.e. a speech about regional facilities.
Recording 3 – a discussion between up to four people set in an educational or training context, i.e. a professor and a student discussing an assignment or project.
Recording 4 – a monologue on an academic subject, e.g. a university lecture.
- Reading (60 Minutes)
Reading module includes 40 questions that can test your reading skills in a wide spectrum. These questions encircle finding main ideas, details, skimming or understanding logical arguments as well as identifying writers´ opinions and purposes. Amongst these questions there might be extracts from books, magazines, advertisements, handbooks etc.
- Writing (60 Minutes)
Academic Writing: The Academic Writing module consists of two tasks in which your writing skills are evaluated in a suitable way for undergraduate or postgraduate studies.
Task 1 includes a graph, table, chart or diagram and the candidates are expected to describe or summarise the information in their own words.
Task 2 includes essay writing. The test takers are expected to respond to a point of view, argument or problem.
General Training Writing: The General Training Writing module consists of two tasks including topics of general interest.
Task 1 includes a situation in which the candidate is asked to write a letter requesting information or explain the situation.
Task 2 includes essay writing in response to a point of view, argument or problem.
- Speaking (11-14 Minutes)
The speaking module evaluates your spoken interaction in English language and consists of three parts.
Part 1 includes general questions asked by the examiner about yourself and your personal interests and takes up to 5 minutes.
Part 2 includes a given topic about which you are asked to talk for up to two minutes. You´ll have one minute preparation time before you start talking and the examiner might ask you one or two questions regarding your topic.
Part 3 encloses further questions about the topic in part two and allows you to express your ideas in a wide range way for up to five minutes.

3. When should I book my IELTS test in advance?
We recommend to book your IELTS test as soon as possible as places fill up quickly.
4. How long does it take to receive my IELTS results?
You´ll be able to receive your IELTS result via e-mail within 3-5 days after your test on computer.
5. What is the test duration?
Reading and Listening sections include 40 questions each. For Writing; you’ll be given two tasks and for speaking you’ll have three parts. The total test hour is 2 hours and 45 minutes.
Listening 30 mins, Reading 60 mins, Writing 60 mins, Speaking 11-14 minutes.
6. For how long will my IELTS result be valid?
The recommended validity for IELTS test results is two years.
7. What shall I bring for my IELTS test?
You need to bring the same passport or the identity document that you used whilst booking your IELTS test.
8. Can I take the IELTS test multiple times?
You had an IELTS test and were not satisfied with your score and you´d like to take the test again? You can book another IELTS test and study for a better result anytime. There is no limit to booking IELTS tests.
9. Where does the IELTS test take place in Vienna?
The IELTS test venue of the British Council is located in K+K Hotel Maria Theresia Kirchberggasse 6, 1070 Vienna for the written exams. Speaking test may take place either at the British Council office premises at Siebensterngasse 21, 1070 Vienna, or at the K+K hotel, please check the test day information email carefully.
10. What do I need whilst registering for the IELTS test?
You can register to your IELTS test online. All you need is a valid ID or passport whilst registering for the IELTS test.
11. How can I pay for my IELTS test?
You can pay for your test through British Council online registration system (by MasterCard/Visa or Klarna).
12. Who evaluates the IELTS test?
The evaluation process is carried out by certified IELTS examiners by the British Council.
13. I was late for my test. Can I still take the test?
The doors of the test room close the moment the exam starts. It´s under the responsibility of the participant to be on time for their test.
14. The Test Dates and Appointments
Please find all available test days online. Test sittings are offered on a regular basis in Vienna on Thursday, Friday or Saturday on a weekly basis.
