The typical question about is therefore “to whom?” Thus, for example, in the sentence “Der Mann gab dem Mädchen eine Rose” the question is “Wem gab der Mann eine Rose?” The answer is “dem Mädchen”. In addition, the dativ indicates WHERE a person or thing is. “Wo liegt das Buch? – Das Buch liegt auf dem Regal.”

Definite and indefinite article in the dativ

The article before the noun indicates in which case this is. It differentiates between causality (begründend: auf Grund, dank, durch, für…), location örtlich: auf, bei, entlang…), modal (Art und Weise: gegen, mit, statt, wider…) and duration (zeitlich: binnen, bis, nach…). Some prepositions require a specific case, for example: “Er geht mit dem Hund spazieren.’ Here, the preposition “mit” indicates that the following noun must be in the dativ case. However, there are also prepositions that, depending on use, may require either dativ or akkusativ, e.g. “Das Mädchen geht in die Schule. / Das Mädchen ist in der Schule.” Here, the preposition “in” can be used in both the akkusativ and the dativ case. In this case, a distinction is made according to whether the object is moving or static. (Movement: go to school, Statics: be in school). To identify which case is the appropriate one, the relevant question is “Where?” in the dativ case and “Where to?” in the akkusativ case.

Prepositions that require dativ only

Theresa May hat außer ihrem Plan keinen Plan.

Prepositions that require dativ or akkusativ

Stelle dich doch neben mich.

With a few tricks, it is very easy to find out which preposition requires which case.
