All about the German Konjunktiv 1<\/h1>\n

The German language is not a difficult language! With us you will learn the German grammar and in no time because learning German can be easy!
\nIn this article, you’ll quickly understand what a Konjunktiv 1 is and how to use it properly.<\/p>\n

What is the Konjunktiv?<\/h2>\n

The Konjunktiv expresses a certain relation to reality. There are two forms of the Konjunktiv in the German language: the Konjunktiv 1 and the Konjunktiv 2, which are partly used in similar contexts.
\nNow, lets start wit the Konjunktiv 1:<\/p>\n

Usages of the Konjunktiv 1<\/h2>\n

a) expression of a wish or request:
\nLang lebe unsere Firma! Man schaue sich das Bild genau an.
\n(The use of the Konjunktiv <\/strong>1 to express an imperative statement is used in oral language or in high-level language style.)<\/p>\n

b) Expression of an assumption or requirement, for example in mathematics tasks:
\nGegeben sei die Halbgerade \u2018s\u2019.<\/p>\n

c) identification of indirect speech:
\nEr meinte, sie komme in einer Woche nach M\u00fcnchen.<\/p>\n

d) identification of unreal comparison:
\nEs schien, als seien sie krank.<\/p>\n

Formation of Konjunktiv <\/strong>1<\/h2>\n

a) The Konjunktiv 1 is formed as follows: Pr\u00e4sensstamm Verb + Konjunktiv 1 \u2013 Endung.<\/p>\n

b) The Konjunktiv 1 endings are:<\/p>\n

1st\u00a0 Person Singular (ich): -e
\n2nd Person Singular (du): -est
\n3rd\u00a0 Person Singular (er\/sie\/es): -e<\/p>\n

1st Person Plural (wir): -en
\n2nd<\/sup>\u00a0 Person Plural (ihr): -et
\n3rd Person Plural (sie\/Sie): -en<\/p>\n

c) Exceptions:<\/p>\n

Sometimes the -e is omitted in the 1st and 3rd person singular. For example, in salutations like \u2018Gr\u00fc\u00df Gott!\u2019
\nThe forms of the Konjunktiv I of \u2018sein\u2019 are always formed in the 1st and 3rd person singular without\u00a0\u00a0 -e: \u00a0ich sei, er sei.<\/p>\n

Watch out!<\/h2>\n

Some forms of the Konjunktiv I are identical to the Indikativ: the form of the 1st<\/sup> person singular and the forms of the 1st<\/sup> and 3rd<\/sup> person plural! Therefore, in such cases, one often resorts to the Konjunktiv 2 or to a construction with \u2018w\u00fcrde\u2019 to make it clearer.<\/p>\n

Example 1: \u2018Mario denkt, ich habe Masern.\u2019\u00a0 (Subjunctive 1, Form identical with Present indicative) -> \u00a0\u2018Mario denkt, ich h\u00e4tte Masern. (Konjunktiv 2)
\nExample 2: \u2018Es schien, als ob sie schlafen.\u2018 (Konjunktiv 1, identical to Present Indikativ ) -> \u00a0schien, als ob sie schliefen. (Konjunktiv 2, identical to Indikativ Pr\u00e4teritum) -> Es schien, als ob sie schlafen w\u00fcrden.#<\/p>\n

Examples for the Konjunktiv 1<\/strong><\/h2>\n

In Konjunktiv <\/strong>1 you do not say your opinion, but you give a statement.<\/p>\n

Direct speech:<\/strong> Maria sagt: \u201eEs ist<\/strong>\u00a0im Sommer sehr hei\u00df in Wien.\u201c
\nIndirect speech<\/strong>: Maria sagt, es sei<\/strong>\u00a0sehr hei\u00df im Sommer in Wien.<\/p>\n

Donald twittert: \u201eCNN\u00a0verbreitet<\/strong>\u00a0Fake News.\u201c
\nDonald sagt, dass CNN fake news\u00a0verbreite<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Er sagt: \u201eIch\u00a0baue<\/strong>\u00a0die Mauer an der Grenze zu Mexiko.\u201c
\nEr sagt, er\u00a0baue<\/strong>\u00a0die Mauer an der Grenze zu Mexiko.<\/p>\n

The Konjunktiv 1 also forms compound forms:<\/strong><\/h2>\n

  1. Konjunktiv Perfect: Er sagte, du habest ein gelbes T-Shirt getragen. (Konjunktiv 1 + Partizip 2)<\/li>\n
  2. \u00a0Konjunktiv Future 1: \u00a0Sie meinte, er werde zu sp\u00e4t kommen. (Konjunktiv 1 + Infinitiv)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
